What knives are used by famous special forces in the world?
In ancient times, the Damascus knife was an important military technology.
The Europeans were introduced to this mysterious cold weapon through the Crusades. In a famous meeting, Saladin, the Arab leader,
showed the Lion Heart, the representative of the Crusaders, the Damascus machete he wore. The story of Saladin "cutting off the silk
scarf" was interpreted into the novel by later generations and spread widely.
There are many enthusiastic Damascus knife researchers active in Europe, and for hundreds of years, Damascus knife can even be listed
as a discipline at the intersection of ordnance and metallurgy. Many researchers have devoted themselves to trying to restore the forging
process of the Damascus knife. But most of their research has focused on metallographic studies of ancient Persian Damascus knives,
analyzing the composition and organization of trace elements inside them, and has done little to reconstruct the process of making them.
In the 1970s, the hand-folded and forged Damascus knife first became popular in the United States, and its initial promoter was the four
founders of the American Blacksmiths Association. Manual folding and forging process at least before the Ming and Qing dynasties, has
been widely spread in China.
In ancient times, the steel made of more than two kinds of different soft and hard steel through special smelting and forging is called fine
steel, that is, today we often say alloy steel, its performance is far better than the general method of casting earth steel. The methods of
manufacturing refined steel around the world have their own characteristics, but the basic principle is the same, the combination of soft
and hard different materials into one, balance the hardness and toughness of steel, so as to achieve better physical properties.
It is now generally believed that the hand-folded and forged Damascus sword is the cold weapon closest to the ancient Damascus sword
in production principle.
Damascus sword is the outstanding sword of ancient steel. These special melted or forged knives have a common feature, the surface will
show a pattern. These patterns are soft and hard different materials overlap each other formed, different materials of the reflectivity is
different, the way of overlapping is ever-changing, the pattern on the knife is also more different, some twists and turns, some shining like
stars. Over time, the ancient people used the pattern as a sign to identify the treasure sword, and then developed the aesthetic appeal of
the pattern.
Modern people who like to forge Damascus knives, in fact, do not value its performance, but its sense of history, and handmade feelings.
After all, with modern technology, it's easy to make a knife that cuts iron like mud. But the feelings of craftsmanship, and the awe of the
heroic age, are far more than these industrial knives can carry.
